The Crystal Dwarves have noted that the Shadowmoon’s appearances correlate with moments of significant change in the world’s pattern. It observes events that will matter to the Prisoner’s eventual escape.

The Orbital Paradox

The Shadowmoon follows no calculable orbit, yet its appearances are not random. The pattern exists but operates according to non-Euclidean mathematics that break mortal minds. The few scholars who have successfully predicted a Shadowmoon rising have invariably gone mad within days of their success.

The closest anyone has come to understanding its movement was the astronomer Qelin Darkmere, who proposed that the Shadowmoon orbits not through space but through probability. It appears not when it arrives but when it becomes likely. It vanishes not when it departs but when its existence becomes improbable.

Effects on Reality

Magical Tides

When the Shadowmoon rises, magic becomes wild and unpredictable. Spells may function backward, sideways, or inside out. A healing spell might steal health from the future. A fireball might burn things that haven’t been created yet. Teleportation might move the destination rather than the traveler.

This has occurred only twice in recorded history. Both times, significant portions of the population experienced shared dreams of a vast eye opening beneath the world’s surface.

The Inverse Dawn

When the Shadowmoon rises at sunrise

“Light and unbeing shall dance at the threshold. The sun will cast shadows of things that never were, and in those shadows, truth will walk undisguised.”

This phenomenon has been observed seven times. Each occurrence coincided with the discovery of artifacts that shouldn’t exist—objects from futures that will never come to pass, tools built by civilizations that were never founded.

The Final Eclipse

When the Shadowmoon grows large enough to hide the sun permanently

Defensive Measures

The Lighthouse Protocol

Major cities have constructed specialized lighthouses that burn with un-light—a form of illumination that casts no shadows. During Shadowmoon rises, these beacons create zones of relative safety where the moon’s influence is diminished.

Lunar Iron

Weapons forged during a Shadowmoon eclipse can harm creatures that exist partially outside reality. This “lunar iron” is rare and precious, as few smiths survive the forging process with their sanity intact.

The Multiplication Meditation

Most Umbralines eventually disappear during particularly strong Shadowmoon rises. Whether they achieve their goals or simply cease to exist is unknown. They leave behind only shadows burned into walls—shadows that move when no one is watching.
