The Five Nations
As recorded by Ambassador Tyreal Moonwhisper, last neutral observer before the Silence of Sanctus
The Current Crisis
Section titled “The Current Crisis”Eighty years have passed since the Crystal Dwarves emerged from their self-imposed isolation, and in that time, the political landscape of Lumia has shifted from stable kingdoms to a web of alliances so tangled that historians have given up trying to map them. Five great nations dominate the continent, with dozens of city-states, free towns, and contested territories caught between them like grain between millstones.
The Shadowmoon rises more frequently. The Swiftpaths grow unreliable. Magic itself rebels against its users. And in this climate of cosmic uncertainty, the nations prepare for a war that everyone knows is coming but no one wants to start.
The Empire of New Anteria
Section titled “The Empire of New Anteria”“From ashes, glory. From glory, ashes. From ashes, glory again.”
Overview
Section titled “Overview”- Geographic Size: 47,000 square miles (roughly the size of England)
- Population: 3.2 million souls (not counting the Registered Dead)
- Government: Necrocratic Bureaucracy with Elected Lich-King
- Current Head of State: Lich-King Malachar III (died 312 years ago, elected 47 years ago)
- Founded: 500 years ago on the ruins of Old Anteria
- Capital: Bone Cathedral (population 400,000 living, 100,000 “otherwise”)
The Death Compact
Section titled “The Death Compact”New Anteria is built on a single, radical principle: death is not disqualification from citizenship. After Old Anteria fell to the Darkling Plague, the survivors made a pact with Iluai, Titan of Death. The dead could return, but only to serve the living. What began as desperate necessity has evolved into the world’s strangest democracy.
Every seven years, the living elect a Lich-King from among the willing dead. The position is considered a burden, not an honor—the Lich-King cannot rest until their term ends. The current king, Malachar III, was a baker in life. He campaigns on “bread for the living, rest for the dead, and justice for all states of being.”
Cities and Settlements
Section titled “Cities and Settlements”- Bone Cathedral: Capital, built inside the ribcage of an ancient dragon god
- Mortem’s Rest: Port city where ghost ships trade with the living
- The Gray Gardens: Agricultural center where zombie labor tends the fields
- Memoria: City of libraries where the dead record their memories
Military: The Eternal Legion
Section titled “Military: The Eternal Legion”New Anteria’s military is genuinely terrifying—not because it employs undead, but because those undead remember every battle they’ve ever fought. A single skeleton soldier might have a thousand years of combat experience. They fight in perfect silence, require no supplies, and cannot be routed by fear.
Current Politics
Section titled “Current Politics”The living grow increasingly nervous about being outnumbered by the dead. The “Vitalist” faction argues for restricting undead rights, while the “Eternalists” push for full integration. Meanwhile, rumors spread that some undead are keeping themselves animated without the Titan’s blessing—through pure will or something darker.
Relations
Section titled “Relations”- Crystal Dwarves: Fascinated horror—studying but not trusting
- Mosswood Federation: Active trade despite philosophical differences
- Magocracy of Chulan: Academic exchange, necromancy research
- Free Kohn: Theological enemies—life worship vs. death acceptance
The Crystal Reaches (Nagburim Collective)
Section titled “The Crystal Reaches (Nagburim Collective)”“In harmony we resonate, in crystal we remember, in stone we endure”
Overview
Section titled “Overview”- Geographic Size: 31,000 square miles (mostly underground, vast networks of crystalline caverns)
- Population: 800,000 Crystal Dwarves (Khaz’vel - “The Transformed”)
- Government: Caste Hierarchy with Harmonic Consensus
- Current High Resonator: The Transparent Council (seven near-perfect nobles)
- Re-emerged: 80 years ago after 500-year isolation
- Capital: Nagburim Prime (The Great Resonance Chamber)
The Transformation and Isolation
Section titled “The Transformation and Isolation”When the Last War’s devastation reached its apex, a dwarven clan sought refuge in caverns of luminous crystal—raw Arcanite deposits that hummed with otherworldly power. They sealed their gates against the burning world above, believing all was lost to ruin. But in that crystalline darkness, the Arcanite worked upon them slowly, inexorably. Over five centuries, flesh transmuted to living crystal, their bodies becoming translucent stone animated by glowing Arcanite hearts. They no longer required food or drink, yet discovered they could not survive beyond Lumia’s Arcanite field—to leave the world would mean becoming lifeless statuary.
The Caste of Crystal Purity
Section titled “The Caste of Crystal Purity”Crystal Dwarf society crystallized—quite literally—into rigid castes based on bodily transparency:
- The Clear: Nearly transparent nobility, their bodies like living diamond
- The Clouded: Middle castes with misty occlusions and mineral veins
- The Marbled: Lower castes bearing patches of mundane stone, iron ore, or granite
- The Gilded: Those who trace their flaws with molten gold, silver, or copper—a practice both shameful and beautiful
The practice of gilding arose among the lower castes as both art and concealment. Some see it as transcendent beauty, turning imperfection into glory. Others view it as desperate masking, hiding nature’s judgment beneath metallic lies. Vex Ironweave, the terrorist who leads the Arcanite Syndicate, was born so flawed that even gilding couldn’t hide his shame—the molten metals simply pooled in his deeper cracks, creating grotesque blobs rather than elegant tracery.
The Language of Resonance
Section titled “The Language of Resonance”Crystal Dwarves speak Tal, a language that rings through crystal like living music. Words become harmonics, sentences become symphonies, and arguments sound like competing orchestras. They can communicate through solid stone by resonance, and their greatest punishments involve being “detuned”—made unable to harmonize with others.
When Crystal Dwarves make decisions, they don’t calculate or compute—they harmonize. Each voice adds its tone to the collective song, and through complex resonances, consensus emerges not through logic but through musical resolution. Discord indicates disagreement; perfect harmony signals unity. This process can take days for complex decisions, as the community literally sings itself toward agreement.
The terrorist Resonance Prime exploits this very system, spreading its discordant song through their communication network, offering the “gift” of unconscious perfection to those who would escape the burden of awareness.
The Arcanite Monopoly and Crisis
Section titled “The Arcanite Monopoly and Crisis”Crystal Dwarves control the Arcanite trade with absolute authority. They sense crystal veins through harmonic resonance, feeling the song each deposit sings deep within the earth. Their 500 years of isolated study gave them knowledge no surface dweller can match. They brought with them:
- Complete records from before the Last War, preserved in crystalline memory
- Designs for the original Arcana Golems (though only lesser versions can now be made)
- Knowledge of Luminari artifacts and their purposes
- Understanding of Arcanite’s true nature and limitations
Yet they face extinction: pure Arcanite grows scarcer, and without it, Crystal Dwarves cannot reproduce. Their children are grown in crystalline wombs, requiring massive Arcanite investment. The Silicon Prophecy states that in 147 years, the last Crystal Dwarf will sing their final harmonic note unless new veins are discovered.
Cities and Settlements
Section titled “Cities and Settlements”- Nagburim Prime: The capital, a vast crystalline cavern where sound becomes visible light
- The Resonance Cascades: Natural crystal formations that amplify and store harmonic memories
- Memory Vaults: Crystal libraries storing 500 years of meticulous records, each memory preserved in song
- The Harmonic Gates: Heavily guarded trade posts with the surface world, where Tal is translated for outsiders
- The Echo Chambers: Deep caverns where Resonance Prime spreads its terrible gift
The Three Philosophies
Section titled “The Three Philosophies”- The Synthesists: Seeking to create artificial Arcanite through harmonic perfection of lesser crystals
- The Reclaimers: Believing surface nations waste Arcanite that belongs to its “true children”
- The Transcendents: Attempting to preserve consciousness in pure crystal song, beyond physical form
Relations
Section titled “Relations”- Everyone: Providing Arcanite in exchange for food, textiles, and organic materials
- New Anteria: Studying whether undeath might solve their reproduction crisis
- Magocracy of Chulan: Sharing knowledge of pre-war magical theory
- Arcana Golems: The “Resonance War”—bitter dispute over artificial consciousness
The Mosswood Federation
Section titled “The Mosswood Federation”“Every voice matters, from the mightiest oak to the smallest mushroom”
Overview
Section titled “Overview”- Geographic Size: 62,000 square miles of forest
- Population: 1.5 million (census difficult due to definition disputes)
- Government: Anarcho-Syndicalist Druid Commune with Rotating Speakers
- Current Speaker-for-the-Trees: A literally talking oak named Grandfather Wisdom
- Founded: Time immemorial, formalized 200 years ago
- Capital: The Heartwood Amphitheater (moves with the seasons)
Radical Inclusion
Section titled “Radical Inclusion”Mosswood extends citizenship to all life within its borders—not just humanoids but animals, plants, fungi, even beneficial bacteria. Council meetings require magical translation between hundreds of species. A typical vote might include input from bears, bees, and birch trees.
Current Crisis: The Awakening
Section titled “Current Crisis: The Awakening”Something is waking up beneath Mosswood. Ancient trees report dreams of fire. Animals flee without explanation. The druids suspect Lumia itself is stirring, and Mosswood sits directly above its heart. If the world-entity awakens, Mosswood will be the first to know—and the first to burn.
Relations
Section titled “Relations”- Everyone: Confused respect—no one understands their government but it works
- Magocracy of Chulan: Ideological opposition—nature vs. controlled magic
- Free Kohn: Trade partners, philosophical cousins
- Crystal Dwarves: Trading organic materials for crystal tools, mutual incomprehension
The Magocracy of Chulan
Section titled “The Magocracy of Chulan”“Knowledge is power. Power is responsibility. Responsibility is knowledge.”
Overview
Section titled “Overview”- Geographic Size: 28,000 square miles
- Population: 2.1 million
- Government: Meritocratic Magocracy with Council of Nine
- Current Archon: Seress Nyxborne (age disputed—claims range from 45 to 450)
- Founded: 723 years ago
- Capital: The Floating Library of Chulan
Rule by Spell
Section titled “Rule by Spell”In Chulan, political power is literally magical power. Citizens earn voting weight by passing increasingly difficult magical exams. The Council of Nine, the supreme governing body, consists of the nine most powerful mages—though “powerful” is constantly redefined to prevent stagnation.
The Reality Revision Project
Section titled “The Reality Revision Project”Chulan’s mages have discovered how to edit reality retroactively through collective ritual. They’ve “fixed” several historical disasters by making them never have happened. The problem: reality is developing scar tissue, and some edits are being rejected with violent temporal storms.
Relations
Section titled “Relations”- Crystal Dwarves: Fascinated by their pre-war knowledge, studying harmonic magic theory
- New Anteria: Necromancy exchange program
- Everyone else: Viewed with suspicion—reality editors are dangerous neighbors
The Free Cities of Kohn
Section titled “The Free Cities of Kohn”“A thousand cities, a thousand ways, a single freedom”
Overview
Section titled “Overview”- Geographic Size: Scattered city-states totaling 19,000 square miles
- Population: 4.5 million across all territories
- Government: Varies by city—from democracy to merchant oligarchy
- Current High Mediator: Rotating position, currently held by Sanctus
- Founded: Various dates, alliance formed 150 years ago
- Primary Cities: Sanctus, Cerax, Kohn Prime, Seventeen others
The Freedom Experiment
Section titled “The Freedom Experiment”Each Free City governs itself completely differently, bound only by the Charter of Liberty—a document guaranteeing free movement, free trade, and free thought between cities. It’s chaos that somehow works, though barely.
The Sanctus Incident
Section titled “The Sanctus Incident”Three months ago, Sanctus—the current High Mediator city—went completely silent. No one can enter or leave. Divination magic shows nothing. The other Free Cities are debating whether to investigate, but that would require agreeing on something, which they’re constitutionally opposed to doing.
The Contested Territories
Section titled “The Contested Territories”The Darkling Wastes
Section titled “The Darkling Wastes”Where Old Anteria once stood. Still contaminated with Darkling corruption. Expeditions report ruins that weren’t there before and architecture that hurts to perceive.
The Neutral Zones
Section titled “The Neutral Zones”Buffer territories maintained between nations by treaty. Increasingly militarized as tensions rise.
The Wandering Isle
Section titled “The Wandering Isle”An island that appears in different lakes and seas. Currently claimed by all five nations simultaneously.
The Crystal Frontier
Section titled “The Crystal Frontier”Disputed mining territories where Arcanite veins cross borders. Site of increasing “incidents” between Crystal Dwarf reclaimers and surface prospectors. The Crystal Dwarves claim they can hear the Arcanite singing in pain when improperly harvested.
The War That’s Coming
Section titled “The War That’s Coming”Five factors are pushing the nations toward conflict:
- The Arcanite Crisis: Crystal Dwarves need it to survive, others need it for magic, and supplies dwindle
- The Undead Question: New Anteria’s dead outnumber everyone else’s living
- The Reality Revision: Chulan’s editing affects everyone without consent
- The Sanctus Silence: Someone or something has taken a Free City
- The Shadowmoon Prophecy: “When five become one, one becomes none”
The Wild Cards
Section titled “The Wild Cards”The Knight Orders
Section titled “The Knight Orders”Technically neutral but each leaning toward different nations based on philosophy.
The Titans
Section titled “The Titans”If war breaks out, will they choose sides? Can they afford not to?
Serane
Section titled “Serane”The last Luminari grows weaker. When she dies, what happens to the balance?
The Awakening World
Section titled “The Awakening World”If Lumia itself wakes up, all politics become irrelevant.
The Resonance Prime
Section titled “The Resonance Prime”The discordant entity spreading through Crystal Dwarf networks could “solve” their crisis by ending consciousness itself.
The Ambassador’s Final Note
Section titled “The Ambassador’s Final Note”“I write this from the last neutral ground in Lumia—a small inn that exists simultaneously in all five nations thanks to a Swiftpath anomaly. The innkeeper, a being of uncertain species and flexible loyalty, serves ale that tastes like home regardless of where home might be.
From my window, I can see five armies that don’t yet know they’re armies. I can feel the tension like lightning before it strikes. The world holds its breath, waiting for someone to exhale first.
The Crystal Dwarves sing their harmonics with increasing discord—not from Resonance Prime’s infection, but from the simple fracture between those who would share their dwindling treasure and those who would hoard it. Their perfect records from the Time Before mock them now, showing what they had and what they’ve lost. They don’t calculate or compute their responses—they feel them, resonate with them, sing them into being. Perhaps that’s why their crisis cuts so deep: you cannot harmonize with extinction.
The irony is perfect: we prepare for war while reality itself unravels. We sharpen swords while the Shadowmoon grows larger. We draw borders while the Swiftpaths collapse.
Perhaps the Prisoner doesn’t need to escape. Perhaps we’ll destroy ourselves first, and they can simply walk out through the rubble of our ambitions.
But here’s the terrible secret I’ve learned in my years of diplomacy: everyone knows the war is pointless. Everyone knows we should unite against the true threats. Everyone knows, and no one can stop it.
Because nations, like people, would rather die being right than live being wrong.
The first shot will be fired by accident—a nervous soldier, a misfired spell, a misunderstood word. But the second shot? That will be fired with purpose. And the third with enthusiasm.
I remain, as always, neutral.
But neutrality, I fear, is about to become extinct.“
[Update: Ambassador Tyreal Moonwhisper disappeared three days after writing this report. The inn where he stayed now exists in only four nations. The Free Cities of Kohn claim they never had an ambassador by that name. Some say they heard crystalline harmonics in the night—a song that spoke of peace through perfect silence. The war has already begun; we just haven’t admitted it yet.]
