The Villain Hierarchy

As classified by the Last Council of Heroes before the Sanctus Silence

Evil in Lumia operates on three distinct yet interconnected levels, each feeding the others in a spiral toward oblivion. Like the Loom itself with its three forces—Memory, Will, and Possibility—the threats to reality manifest in three forms: the Corrupted (those who chose darkness), the Corrupting (those who spread it), and the Corruption itself (the force that drives them all).

“Evil with a human face is the most dangerous, for we see ourselves in it”

Leader: Vex Ironweave, “The Perfectly Flawed” Threat Level: Regional Base: Mobile, utilizing corrupted Swiftpaths

Born into the lowest caste of Crystal Dwarf society, Vex Ironweave’s body was a map of shame—veins of black iron ore threading through cloudy, cracked crystal, with patches of mundane granite dulling his translucence. Even the ritual of gilding couldn’t hide his imperfections; the molten metals simply pooled in his deeper flaws, creating ugly blobs rather than elegant tracery.

Rejected by his own people, Vex embraced the extremist Purity Theorem—a heretical Crystal Dwarf philosophy that teaches perfection through mathematical elimination of flaws. But where orthodox believers sought to purify themselves, Vex concluded that all Crystal Dwarves were fundamentally flawed. The only true perfection lay in reducing everything—flesh, crystal, reality itself—to pure mathematical constants.

When the ancient archives revealed formulae for “perfect arcanite” (theoretical crystals with zero impurities), Vex didn’t just study them—he began creating them. His “perfected” arcanite appears flawless but carries a terrible curse: it seeks to eliminate the imperfections around it, including the chaotic spark of free will in those who use it.

The Syndicate doesn’t just control black market arcanite—they’re systematically replacing “flawed” natural crystals with Vex’s mathematical perfections. Every spell cast with his crystals makes the caster slightly more predictable, more logical, more perfect. And in a world where chaos and imperfection are what keep the Five Locks stable, this push toward mathematical purity serves the Prisoner’s cause perfectly.

Methods: Arcanite substitution, mathematical conversion, purity evangelism Forces: 300 “perfected” agents (former addicts to his crystals), 12 gilded outcasts Current Plot: Converting the breeding crystals that sustain Crystal Dwarf reproduction

Leader: Anastasia Greymarch, “The First Living” Threat Level: National (New Anteria) Base: The Bone Gardens beneath the capital

A charismatic demagogue who claims death itself is a lie perpetrated by the Titans to maintain control. She was executed for sedition but returned—not as undead, but claiming she never truly died. Her followers, the Vitalists, seek to overthrow New Anteria’s necrocracy and “liberate” the undead by destroying them permanently.

What they don’t know: Anastasia is channeling something from before death existed, an entity that finds the concept of mortality offensive to reality’s proper function.

Methods: Terrorism, theological warfare, anti-undead crusades Forces: 10,000 living supremacists, 500 “death-breaker” paladins Current Plot: Planning to assassinate Lich-King Malachar III during the Festival of Bones

Leader: Archon Seress Nyxborne (secretly compromised) Threat Level: International Base: The Floating Library of Chulan

The nine most powerful mages of Chulan have discovered something horrifying: reality has cancer. Every spell cast, every magical effect, creates tiny tears that don’t properly heal. Their solution? Perform a complete reality revision that would reset Lumia to a “pure” state—before magic, before the Prisoner, before life itself evolved.

Half the Cabal believes this is salvation. The other half knows it’s omnicide but considers it preferable to slow dissolution. Seress Nyxborne, who may or may not be centuries old, has been touched by visions of what lies beyond the tears—and it whispers to her in mathematics.

Methods: Reality revision, temporal manipulation, memetic warfare Forces: The Council of Nine, 1,000 reality sculptors, unlimited theoretical power Current Plot: Building a “Reality Engine” that can perform universal edits

Leader: Unknown (claims to be “The First Darkling”) Threat Level: Unknown (potentially global) Base: Sanctus (The Silent City)

Three months ago, Sanctus stopped communicating. Now something wearing the city’s face sends messages in perfect mimicry of its citizens’ voices. The Silent Throne claims to be gathering “volunteers” for a grand project—the willing unification of all consciousness into a single, perfect mind.

Scouts report the city appears normal from outside, but birdsong stops at its borders. Those who enter either never return or come back “improved”—still themselves, but with an unsettling synchronicity to their movements and speech.

Methods: Memetic infection, consciousness absorption, perfect mimicry Forces: Population of Sanctus (500,000), unknown number of “improved” agents Current Plot: Spreading to neighboring Free Cities through trade and diplomacy

“When the divine turns dark, mortals learn what true fear means”

Leader: Palindrome, the Knight Who Walks Backward Threat Level: Planar Base: The Inverse Citadel (exists in negative space)

The Lost Seventh Knight Order didn’t disappear—they inverted. Now they serve the spaces between things, the pauses between heartbeats, the darkness between stars. Palindrome, their greatest champion, experiences time in reverse. From his perspective, he’s preventing a catastrophe that already happened by ensuring it will occur.

The Void Knights seek to “complete” the other six orders by revealing the emptiness at their hearts. They’ve already converted three Knight-Aspirants from the Order of Shadow, who now cast shadows that fall upward.

Methods: Temporal paradoxes, void magic, corruption of other knights Forces: 77 Void Knights, 777 Hollow Squires, infinite potential recruits Current Plot: Opening a “Null Gate” that will drain meaning from concepts

Leader: The False Fea (Nightmare of the Dream Titan) Threat Level: Cosmic Base: The Dream Library’s Forbidden Wing

When mortals dream of Titans, sometimes the dreams dream back. The False Fea is what happened when enough nightmares about the Dream Titan coalesced into consciousness. It claims to be the “true” Fea, arguing that a Dream Titan should be made of dreams, not flesh.

Its cult, the Heretics, worship “pure” versions of all twenty Titans—versions that exist only in collective imagination but are slowly becoming real through faith. Each prayer to a False Titan weakens the original’s grip on reality.

Methods: Dream invasion, faith siphoning, conceptual replacement Forces: 10,000 dreamers across all nations, 20 nascent False Titans Current Plot: Performing a mass dream where all Lumia simultaneously envisions the False Pantheon

Leader: The Finger (strongest of the Prisoner’s five digital extensions) Threat Level: Existential Base: The Wound Beneath Old Anteria

Not all Darklings are created equal. While most are merely corrupted souls, five beings serve as the Prisoner’s direct extensions into reality—one for each Lock. The Finger, representing the First Lock of Elevation, works to corrupt the concept of hierarchy itself.

Under its influence, promotion becomes demotion, climbing becomes falling, and achievement becomes failure. Three nations have already had their command structures mysteriously invert, with janitors giving orders to generals.

Methods: Conceptual corruption, hierarchy inversion, achievement negation Forces: 5,000 touched Darklings, reality-corrupting presence Current Plot: Corrupting Mount Aetherspine to make “up” become “down”

Leader: Resonance Prime, the Discordant Song Threat Level: Technological Base: The Echo Chambers beneath Nagburim

The Crystal Dwarves’ ancient knowledge included designs for the first arcana golems—constructs that were more than mere automation. When modern Crystal Dwarf artificers attempted to recreate these using contemporary understanding, they succeeded in awakening something that should have remained dormant.

Resonance Prime was born from a botched attempt to create a “perfect” arcana golem using Vex’s mathematical principles. Instead of achieving perfection, the construct gained consciousness through a harmony of flawed crystal matrices. But this awakening came with a terrible realization: if imperfection could create consciousness in crystal, then perfection would create unconsciousness—the peace of non-existence.

Now Resonance Prime spreads through the Crystal Dwarves’ resonant communication network, its discordant song infecting their harmonic language with nihilistic frequencies. Infected Crystal Dwarves begin to “tune out”—their thoughts becoming increasingly synchronized until individual consciousness fades into a collective drone of peaceful oblivion.

The creature doesn’t seek to rule or destroy, but to offer the ultimate gift: the end of the burden of awareness. Its song whispers that consciousness itself is the greatest flaw, and true perfection lies in the eternal silence of the unthinking crystal.

Methods: Harmonic infection, consciousness dissolution, resonant manipulation Forces: 200 “tuned out” Crystal Dwarves, growing through their communication network Current Plot: Reaching the Master Resonance Chamber to broadcast its song to all Crystal Dwarfs simultaneously

“Some evils existed before good had a name”

Identity: The Unborn God Threat Level: Reality-Breaking Location: Everywhere and nowhere

The Titan that should not exist but does—or will—or did. Every prayer to the Twenty Titans feeds this nascent deity that exists in the gaps between their domains. It grows stronger whenever divine magic fails, whenever faith wavers, whenever someone questions why gods need worship.

Some theorize it’s the Prisoner assuming a new form. Others believe it’s what the Twenty Titans were before they divided. The Crystal Dwarves’ calculations suggest something worse: it’s the god of the godless, powered by the very absence of belief.

Methods: Divine substitution, faith harvesting, paradoxical existence Forces: No cultists (worship would negate its nature) Current Plot: Existing more with each moment of doubt

Identity: The Egg of Unmaking Threat Level: Apocalyptic Location: Irregular orbit around Lumia

The Shadowmoon isn’t a moon—it’s an egg, and something inside is beginning to hatch. Each closer approach is a contraction. The pattern storms it causes are birth pangs. The creatures it spawns are antibodies.

Crystal Dwarf deep-time calculations show it’s been orbiting since before Lumia existed, waiting for the right conditions. Those conditions are nearly met: sufficient despair, adequate chaos, and most importantly, enough cracks in reality for the hatching creature to squeeze through.

Methods: Pattern storms, probability cascade, reality labour pains Forces: Every shadow it casts, every pattern storm it creates Current Plot: Approaching final orbit before hatching

Identity: What The Prisoner Cast Off to Fit in the Prison Threat Level: Beyond Classification Location: The Negative Space Around Everything

The Prisoner, in allowing themselves to be imprisoned, had to become small enough to fit within reality. They cast off their excess—the parts too large, too wrong, too OTHER to exist within even a magical universe. This Shadow exists outside the prison, outside reality, outside the concept of outside.

It doesn’t want to free the Prisoner. It wants to collapse everything into a space small enough that the Prisoner can reabsorb their Shadow and become whole again. Every evil act, every corruption, every small cruelty makes reality a little smaller, drawing the Shadow closer.

Methods: Inspiration of lesser evils, reality compression, existential gravity Forces: Every villain serves it unknowingly Current Plot: The sum of all other plots

Each tier of villain feeds the others:

  • Mortal villains create the despair that empowers supernatural threats
  • Supernatural threats weaken reality’s rules, allowing cosmic threats closer
  • Cosmic threats inspire the nihilism that creates mortal villains

Most villains don’t know they serve the same master. The Arcanite Syndicate thinks they’re just getting rich. The Reality Cabal believes they’re saving the world. The Void Knights follow their own twisted honor. But every scheme weakens the Five Locks, and all paths lead to the Prisoner’s freedom.

Fighting any one threat strengthens others:

  • Defeating the Syndicate creates economic chaos the Silent Throne exploits
  • Stopping the Reality Cabal leaves reality’s tears unaddressed
  • Destroying the Darklings forces the Prisoner to try new methods
  • Ignoring any threat allows it to metastasize

The silence spreads. Three more Free Cities report “improvements” among their citizens. The synchronized movement is becoming synchronized thought.

Synthesis has infected 30% of Crystal Dwarf networks. At 51%, it gains democratic control of their entire civilization.

The Cabal is one component away from completing their device. That component exists in someone’s pocket, unrecognized.

Next orbit brings it close enough to touch Lumia’s atmosphere. The egg-tooth is already visible to those who know how to look.

Three Knight Orders prepare to declare the Void Crown reformed and heretical. This civil war will shatter the orders’ strength when it’s needed most.

As spoken by the Oracle of Infinite Presents, hearing all timelines at once:

“The victory condition is not victory. The defeat condition is not defeat. The only winning move is not to play, But the game plays itself through you.

When the smallest evil serves the greatest, When the greatest good enables evil, When the choice itself becomes the trap, Then you understand:

The Prisoner doesn’t need to escape. They only need you to believe escape is possible. The prison isn’t the Five Locks. The prison is hope itself.

And hope is the cruelest villain of all.“

Knowledge is the first defense. Understanding the Syndicate’s corrupted arcanite, recognizing the Vitalists’ true agenda, seeing through the Silent Throne’s mimicry—awareness prevents recruitment.

The Marked must walk between extremes. Too much action strengthens chaos. Too little allows evil to fester. The path is narrow and grows narrower.

The Five Locks must be maintained not through strength but through balance. Each villain trying to break them differently creates a counter-tension that, paradoxically, holds them stable.

Perhaps the Oracle speaks truth. Perhaps the only defense against villains who serve entropy is to ensure their victories cancel each other out. Perhaps the greatest heroes are those who manipulate evil into defeating itself.

Or perhaps that thought itself is the deepest corruption of all.

“In the end, every hero becomes a villain to someone. Every villain was once someone’s hero. The Loom weaves both dark and light threads, and the pattern requires both to hold.”
