Getting Started

New to LuminariMUD, or to MUDs in general? This page walks the path from “I’ve never played a text game” to “I have a character standing in the world.”

The three steps

  1. Get a client. A MUD client is a small program that connects to the game and shows its text. See Connect & play for recommended clients and the exact address and port.
  2. Connect to the game. Point your client at luminarimud.com, port 4100.
  3. Create a character. Follow the in-game prompts to pick a name, race, and class, then step into the world.

Learning as you play

You don’t need to memorise anything up front. Two habits carry you a long way:

  • Type help <topic> whenever you meet something new — the game ships an extensive in-game help system.
  • Read the room. LuminariMUD describes where you are, who’s present, and what you can do; the exits and objects named in the text are usually your next commands.
